Dr. Jeffrey Selman, PsyD, BCBA-D, VP, Clinical Services for First Children Services, which serves children with autism spectrum disorder and their families through its STRIVE Autism Care Continuum in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Dr. Selman discusses below:

  • Tips for helping a child with autism cope with routine changes or new activities
  • The importance of strict schedules and routines for some kids with autism
  • Why changes in routine can cause difficult behaviors for kids with ASD
  • How First Children Services’ Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and trained behavior specialists help kids with autism manage behaviors and establish routines through its STRIVE Autism Care Continuum

How Changes in Routine Impact Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder by
Dr. Jeffrey Selman, PsyD, BCBA-D, VP, Clinical Services for First Children Services, which serves children with autism spectrum disorder and their families through its STRIVE Autism Care Continuum.

  1. Tips for helping a child with autism cope with routine changes or new activities:
Many children have difficulty responding to changes in routine. Humans in general are creatures of habit and change requires effort and energy. For children with autism, it is particularly challenging because the need for sameness helps create predictability and comfort in a world that may otherwise feel overwhelming. Rigidity and inflexible
adherence to routines is hallmark diagnostic criteria for children on the autism spectrum. When there are changes, even subtle changes, it can be distressing and trigger disruptive behavior, tantrums and anxiety.
  2. The importance of strict schedules and routines for some kids with autism:
It is important to maintain consistent routines and predictable transitions for children with autism. Often times, routines are utilized for parts of the day (e.g., morning routines, evening schedules, etc.), but some individuals benefit from added structure and for tasks to be broken down into shorter increments or steps. Children with autism may have difficulty with receptive and expressive language; therefore, visual schedules with pictures or written directions are encouraged.
  3. Why can changes in routine cause difficult behaviors for kids with ASD?
Transitions can often trigger challenging behavior. Most children present with at least some resistance, often because we are asking kids to end a preferred activity (perhaps video games) to initiate a less preferred activity (dinner time). Challenging behavior may be a result of internal dysregulation (anger, frustration, anxiety, cognitive inflexibility)
and reinforced behavior. We want to be sure we are giving ample preview and countdown before a transition occurs. Transitions should be highlighted within a more robust schedule for the day, and these moments can be role-played and rehearsed.
Providing plenty of rewards can help reinforce the desired behavior. Parents, caregivers, and staff working with the child should remember to give specific, in the moment labeled praise. Some children will also benefit from tangible rewards, which can motivate a more positive response.
  4. How does First Children Services’ Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and trained behavior specialists help kids with autism manage behaviors and establish routines through its STRIVE Autism Care Continuum?
Through our STRIVE Autism Care Continuum, First Children Services’ Board Certified Behavior Analysts and clinical staff develop programs for clients that address challenges with transitions and breaks in routine. Programs are delivered in clinical settings and in families’ homes where parents can receive plenty of one-on-one guidance, support and training. It is imperative that kids are exposed to similar structures and programming in multiple environments, and that parents understand how to implement the strategies in a natural, positive and consistent manner.

Simple Tips to Balance Home, Career and Family

Working from home full-time has its downsides—dealing with home and family life at the same time can certainly be taxing if you aren’t prepared to handle it. Indeed, it can be hard to strike a balance between these two very important aspects of life, which is why you must give yourself a little bit of help where possible, as well as take the time to give yourself some TLC. Let’s explore the ways you can make it work.

A Strong Case for Delegation

When you’re balancing remote work and family life full-time, it won’t be long before you realize that you simply can’t do everything yourself.

  • Delegation could save your sanity and help you run both your career and home more efficiently.
  • Identify work tasks you can easily outsource (if possible), then find expert freelancers to delegate them to.
  • On the home front, you can also hire professionals for cleaning your house, giving
yourself one less chore to tackle.

A Real Need for Tech

Both work and family can be demanding, so it’s not at all against the rules to make efficient use of tech to help you do both—and ultimately, make your life just a tad easier.

  • Make use of remote work tools to help you work more efficiently and stay productive.
  • With kids underfoot, consider investing in age-appropriate electronics to keep them
entertained while you’re busy with work.
  • Make sure that your kids are also learning while using tech, and look for STEM toys that are as educational as they are fun.

A Must to Maintain Self-Care

Make sure to give yourself time to reset and relax because you’ve certainly earned it.

  • A self-care routine is a real necessity when you work from home.
  • Make it a point to stay active as inactivity can be harmful to your health.
  • Stick to a structured routine when you work from home, so you not only get everything you need done, but also have enough time for yourself and for your family.

Yes, juggling work and family is a challenge magnified when you do both full-time and at home.

Know that there’s nothing heroic about running yourself ragged, so get help where you can, get creative, and, most importantly, get some perspective. You’ve got this!

Sesame Street supporting children affected by parental addiction.

Sesame Street just announced it has launched an initiative supporting children affected by parental addiction.

Sesame Workshop Launches Initiative to Support Children Affected by Parental Addiction
Sesame Street Muppet Karli—whose mother struggles with addiction—offers hope and resilience-building strategies

(New York, NY) October 9, 2019—Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street, is announcing an initiative to support children and families affected by parental addiction. The initiative features Karli, a 6 ½-year-old Sesame Street Muppet whose mom is dealing with addiction. In new videos and other content, favorite Sesame Street characters like Elmo and Abby Cadabby learn what Karli is going through and help their friend to cope. The resources, which are part of the Sesame Street in Communities program and freely available on www.SesameStreetinCommunities.org, deliver the words children need to hear most: You are not alone. You will be taken care of. Addiction is a sickness and, as with any sickness, people need help to get better. And most importantly: It’s not your fault.

In the United States, there are 5.7 million children under age 11, or one in eight children, living in households with a parent who has a substance abuse disorder—a number that doesn’t include the countless children not living with a parent due to separation or divorce, incarceration, or death as a result of their addiction. One in three of these children will enter foster care due to parental addiction, a number that has grown by more than 50% in the past decade. The trauma of parental addiction can have lasting impacts on a child’s health and wellbeing, but children can be incredibly resilient; the effects of traumatic experiences can be mitigated with the right support from caring adults like the parents, caregivers, and providers this initiative targets.

Created in consultation with experts in addiction and early childhood development, these engaging bilingual resources model strategies to help children overcome the trauma of parental addiction and build resilience while providing age-appropriate messages and tools for those caring adults to help children cope.

“Addiction is often seen as a ‘grown-up’ issue, but it impacts children in ways that aren’t always visible. Having a parent battling addiction can be one of the most isolating and stressful situations young children and their families face,” said Sherrie Westin, President of Social Impact and Philanthropy, Sesame Workshop. Sesame Street has always been a source of comfort to children during the toughest of times, and our new resources are designed to break down the stigma of parental addiction and help families build hope for the future.”

Karli was first introduced in May 2019 as the face of the Sesame Street in Communities foster care initiative. With today’s announcement, Karli’s storyline expands to include the reason she was placed in foster care: her mother had to go away for treatment, but now she’s back home and in recovery. The new resources, which help children like Karli understand the situation and cope with big feelings, include:

  • What is Addiction?Elmo’s dad, Louie, explains that addiction is a sickness—but not the kind you catch like a cold.
  • Lending a HandKarli tells Elmo and Chris about her mom’s meetings and the special kids-only meetings where she gets to spend time with other children going through the same thing.
  • Monster MusicAfter her mom returns home from treatment, Karli shares a special moment with Abby Cadabby.
  • It’s Not Your FaultKarli tells Elmo that she used to feel like her mom’s addiction was her fault, but has learned that it was a grown-up problem and that her mom loves her no matter what.
  • We’re Special and So Are YouKarli, Elmo, Rosita, and Abby Cadabby share the qualities that make them resilient.
  • Live Action Films, including a film about Salia, a thriving 10-year-old who’s “been there” and accompanying tips from Karli and Salia like sharing your feelings with a good friendbreathing deep, and drawing feeling flowers. And, as part of our professional development offerings, a portrait of a provider in the field.
  • Activities and articles for parents and providers, including a digital coloring quilt interactive, a new Play, Talk, Imagine! storybook, and helpful answers to children’s difficult questions. The new resources are designed to promote engagement between children and the caring adults in their lives.

“The significance of Sesame Workshop’s new initiative on parental addiction cannot be overstated,” said Jerry Moe, National Director of Children’s Programs at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, and key advisor on the new initiative. “There have been precious few resources to help young children, so this initiative is a game-changer for the important work we do with kids at Hazelden Betty Ford and for professionals everywhere on the front lines of our nation’s addiction crisis. For children who connect to Karli, hearing, ‘It’s not your fault—you are not alone, and there are safe people and places that can help,’ opens a path to hope and healing. This Sesame Street in Communities resource fills a huge void for millions of families hurt by addiction and helps kids be kids again.”Outlook-sesamework

Love Broadway shows but find it hard to get to NYC during these busy school months? Broadway HD is bringing you a streaming service to help you out.

2019September2Remember.png

Trading in those lazy summer days for the fast-paced, back-to-school routines can be rough.  But when you add a little family time into those busy schedules, it doesn’t have to be!  This September, BroadwayHD, the premiere streaming service for live theater, is helping to bring families together to experience the magic and thrill of theater with a family friendly playlist for everyone to enjoy.  Classics like The Sound of Music and Peter Pan to spellbinding productions like Cirque du Soleil: Toruk – The First Flight will make for the most memorable family entertainment night.   Below is a rundown of some of the performances included in the playlist.  I wanted to see if you might be interested in learning more about BroadwayHD and covering the debut of this playlist as well as other family-friendly content in service.

  • Wind in the Willows – Join Ratty, Badger, Mole and the impulsive Toad as they embark on a series of riotous adventures spiraling from Toad’s insatiable need for speed!  Featuring eye-poppingly beautiful design, exuberant choreography and a gloriously British score, The Wind in the Willows recently brought comedy, heart and thrills to the world-famous London Palladium for a strictly limited summer season.
  • The Sound of Music – In this exciting production of the universally beloved musical which made its broadcast debut in the UK on ITV, the enchanting Kara Tointon (Mr Selfridge, EastEnders) delivers a “mesmerizing performance and incredible vocal talents” (Daily Mail) as Maria, an apprentice nun who is tasked with caring for the children of a retired naval officer (Julian Ovenden, Downton Abbey).  With Maria’s love for music and unwavering confidence, she brings a new zest for life back into the household.  The performance is supported by Katherine Kelly (Mr Selfridge, Coronation Street) as Baroness Elsa Schraeder and Alexander Armstrong (The Armstrong and Miller Show, Danger Mouse) as Max Detweiler, and also features two songs not in the original movie but part of the stage show since 1959, “How Can Love Survive,” and “No Way to Stop It.”  THE SOUND OF MUSIC LIVE also features showtune favorites like “The Sound of Music,” “Edelweiss,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” “My Favorite Things” and many others.
  • The Woodsman – Based on the beloved writings of L. Frank Baum, The Woodsman, an imaginative retelling of the origins of Oz’s Tin Woodsman, is the story of the Tin Man, the woman he loved, and the witch that would stop at nothing to keep them apart. Through spectacular life-size puppetry and original music, the ensemble of Strangemen & Co. presents an inventive take on one of America’s original fairy tales.
  • Railway Children – The Railway Children tells the story of Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis, three children whose lives change dramatically when their father is mysteriously taken away. They move from London to a cottage in rural Yorkshire with their mother, where they befriend the local railway porter, Perks, and embark on a magical journey of discovery, friendship and adventure. But the mystery remains – where is Father, and is he ever coming back?
  • Puffs – For seven years a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs… who just happened to be there too. A tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world.  The New York Times proclaims PUFFS, “A FAST-PACED ROMP through the ‘Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic.’
  • Prince and the Pauper – From BBC and based on the Mark Twain classic, Prince and the Pauper is a classic trope. The show captures a classic trope of two individuals switching places. You’ll feel the chill in the castle air and smell the foetid London streets in this richly atmospheric tale of Tudor England. Mark Twain’s story of mistaken identities stars Keith Michell, who re-creates the role that made him famous (King Henry in the classic BBC series The Six Wives of Henry VIII). Street urchin Tom Canty could be Prince Edward’s identical twin brother. When they get mixed up, no-one will believe their stories.
  • Peter Pan – A smash hit when it debuted in 1991, this production of Peter Pan starring Cathy Rigby toured the globe and continues to be beloved by theater goers.  The show was filmed in 2000 and features spectacular flying sequences as well as the tunes that everyone loves such as “I’m Flying” and “I Won’t Grow Up.”

  • Hetty Feather – A BroadwayHD original production debuting for the first time exclusively on BroadwayHD. From the best-selling author Jacqueline Wilson, the tale of plucky Hetty Feather is brought thrillingly to life on stage by award-winning scriptwriter Emma Reeves (CBBC’s The Story of Tracy Beaker) and by Olivier Award-nominated director Sally Cookson, whose many five star productions include Peter Pan, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, and Stick Man.  With an original musical score by Benji Bower, circus skills and a huge heart, Hetty Feather is a terrific adventure story! Starring BAFTA-nominated actress Phoebe Thomas in the title role, this production of Hetty Feather was filmed from the 2015 Olivier nominated production on the West End in London.
  • Cirque du Soleil: Toruk – The First Flight – Toruk – The First Flight is a live immersive multimedia spectacle that brings to the stage the breathtaking world of James Cameron’s Avatar like you have never seen it before. Through a riveting fusion of cutting edge visuals, puppetry and stagecraft buoyed by a soaring cinematic score, Cirque du Soleil applies its unique signature style to James Cameron’s imaginary world and “makes the bond” between two kindred artistic visions that capture the imagination. It is a living ode to the Na’vi’s symbiotic coexistence with nature and their belief in the basic interconnectedness of all living things. Narrated by a “Na’vi Storyteller” and populated by unforgettable characters, Toruk – The First Flight is a mythical tale set thousands of years before the events depicted in the film Avatar, and before any humans ever set foot on Pandora.

Easy Online Will Making by Trust & Will

Ahhh.. Creating a will. One of the last things you ever want to do. Not only is it time consuming and a bunch of legal terms, but it is also talking about your possibly timely or untimely demise and something we really do not want to talk or think about. The fact is, it’s important. Especially if you have children.

0aa2c5a9-80c8-45aa-91a3-77bea9b3715a.png

I have been following the Dave Ramsey program for a little over a year now, and one of the things he preaches is the benefits of having a Will.

Many of us, when we think of a Will, we think of old age and how we will divvy up our belongings to our loved ones. The fact of the matter is, a Will is much more than that, and anyone over the age of 18, especially anyone with a child or children need to start thinking about their Will now. Even better, don’t just think about it, get it done.

20190703_083144.jpg

A Will is there in case something were to happen to you to let your children go to whom you wish. Without a written, legal Will, there is a long process with the state in which probate court will need to be involved to decide the fate of where your children go. And who knows where they’ll wind up in the mean time…

There is an easy to use online program that literally makes creating a will a 10 minute thing. You can go to Trust & Will  and create a Trust, a Will, or just a document to specificity the guardians of your children should something ever happen to you and/or your spouse. You can do all 3 in one document for a discount as well.

What’s the benefits of each? They break it down simply for you below;

Once you have the document completed, you can choose to print it yourself, or to have the documents sent to you (or both). You have to get it notarized in order for it to become a legal document, so you’ll need a physical copy no matter what.

That seems to be the biggest issue for people, finding the right place or the time to get the documents officiated and notarized. Luckily, if you have a UPS store by you, you’re in luck. Simply go to their website and click services. You’ll see a notary public section where you can make an appointment. I found it extremely convenient that they have weekend appointments. All in all it should take no more than 30 minutes. And bonus? They provide the signature witnesses as well which is another annoyance to find witnesses available yourself.

Notary

I was skeptical of it only taking 10 minutes, but honestly it did. It is such a simple process and my husband and I are happy to have this crossed off of our “adulting” to-do-list.

The essential oils they sent I actually have never used. They are;

Cajeput (Melaleuca Cajuputi) – Use for cuts and scrapes, therapeutic massage, decongestant.

Cajeput has great value in skin care and wound cleansing, stimulates the mind and assists with getting back into balance. Its antiseptic and expectorant properties make it excellent for respiratory tract infections such as colds, laryngitis, bronchitis and it may be helpful for asthma, as well as nasal and sinus congestion.

Pain relieving properties make it useful in massage for neuralgia, headaches, muscle stiffness and general aches and pains. The oil is also reputed to have insect repellent qualities and can be applied to sooth insect bites.

Orange (Citrus Cinensis) – Use as room deodorizer, decongestant, stress relief and stimulation.

A widely used room deodorizer with uplifting effects. Can also help relieve the symptoms of colds and other respiratory ailments.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) – known to be a potent and powerful aid for digestive health.

Its strong licorice flavor and aroma is gained from the steam distillation from the crushed seeds of the plant

Clove (Eugenia Caryophyllus) – Use as massage oil for stress relief and aphrodisiac, pain relief, skin care.

Clove_Essential_Oil_10ml

A sweet warm scent and very intense flavor. Clove oil is known to provide potent antiseptic and anti-inflammatory benefits and is a preservative when used in all-natural products.

Clove can be applied topically to irritated skin, combined with Coconut or Argan oil to create an aromatherapy massage oil, or mixed in other products to enhance their benefits. Clove oil can be used with a diffuser to sooth respiratory illnesses, relieve stress and treat headaches.

All of their essential oil’s are 10ml.  You can buy them in sets of 5 for $34.99 or single bottles at $14.99 AND they’re currently running a special, if you buy 5, you get a FREE Diffuser! How is that for getting a bargain?

Next up is the Yoga Mat Spray ($9.99 MSRP) comes in a 100ml bottle. There are 3 varieties to choose from but I was sent to Lavender which I love. It is such a relaxing fragrance. Although I am not a “yogi” I like to spray it around the house creating a calming environment.

yoga_mat_spray_category

“The missing link to achieve the perfect end to your practice. With just a few simple sprays you can sterilize your mat and bring on inner peace”

I also tested out the “Supa Dupa” Moon Flower incense and whoa are they nice and big! I hate getting incense and they burn so quick and done. These are huge! They burn very slow and are very aromatic. I was impressed by how long they were as well. They come in a really nice box too!

incense_all_regular-768x512.jpg

I got the 12 long sticks, which is $12.99 but they have a smaller option where you can get 6 for $6.99 as well.

DiaResQ Comes to the Rescue!

DiaResQ is a NEW Natural Approach That Comes to the Rescue!
Think of all the times that you are running errands and need to eat something quickly that doesn’t agree with you later! Next time when you feel the signs of diarrhea, you can reach for a product that really works! DiaResQ is a food, not a drug, made from naturally derived ingredients to provide rapid indigestion relief.

DiaResQv3 (1)

How Does DiaResQ Work?
DiaResQ works with your body to support digestive health and restore normal intestinal function. It features an innovative combination of immune factors and important nutritional components. Plus, it is safe for children as young as one year in age. Besides being handy to have at home, it’s the perfect companion to take on trips near and far!

How is DiaResQ Different?
Many diarrhea relief products alleviate the symptoms by interfering with your body’s natural immune response when you eat something that doesn’t agree with you. DiaResQ is different because it works with your body’s natural defenses to support digestive health by delivering micronutrients, macronutrients, and immune factors to get you back to normal in no time!

Where Can I Find DiaResQ?
You can find DiaResQ at Amazon, Target, CVS, Walmart and these additional retailers.

Digital wellbeing. The new normal health checkup you must do on yourself and your children.

Being a blogger, I have some close contacts with youtube, and have been enlightened by their ability to say, “hey, we love you, but you need a break from us!”

YouTube is introducing new tools that help people better understand their tech usage, focus on what matter most and disconnect when needed.  Starting today, anyone can find all of these new tools in one place, alongside more info about how much time they’re actually spending on YouTube.

You can access this easily on your youtube account by clicking to home.  There is a new “time watched” button.

Phew.

I thought I watched much more than this, but I guess it’s been a busy week and I haven’t been as engulfed in my phone.

It’s almost scary to hit the button and see the reality in black and white.

I suggest everyone takes a moment to check this new feature out and especially check in on your children’s youtube binging and see if you need to adjust anything to fit your family needs better.

This is better explained in a blog release from Youtube themselves.
