Disney World trip with the 2016 Mazda CX-5

1471190093192

This year, we were fortunate enough to be able to take the kids to their first Disney World trip in Florida. I worked with Drive Shop to test out the 2016 Mazda CX-5 for the week while there because we needed something reliable. It definitely did not disappoint!

20160810_090933

The color was excellent for the extreme heat. Glacier White with light beige interior. Perfect to keep the car cool when the sun is beaming down.

This crossover SUV fits 5 comfortably and had such a smooth ride. The stylish exterior and interior made driving it around south Florida so much fun. We stayed in Palm Bay which is more on the east coast and had to travel an hour and a half to Disney World in Orlando. The SkyActive technology by Mazda made the gas last the entire week even with the long trips.

The cruise control came in handy during the long trip on the same road and it had a feature I’ve never seen before. It was a car length sensor that you can set the cruise control to keep the car one, two, or three car lengths behind the car in front of you.

20160810_220628

The center console is where the radio controls are as well as the volume and mute. This system has no power off button, only mute. The large center button is a toggle button. It controls the LCD panel for everything. You can also use the touch screen feature, but when driving the center button is easier to navigate everything.

There is a “sport” button that allows you to easily flip the car into sport mode if you’re on the highway and want to feel some extra “umf”!

20160810_220708

The number one thing is it got us to and from Disney safely! There was a little rain storm on the way there and it drove great in it. One of the best features is when I had to use the brights, it has an “auto” sensor when on the auto feature. This allowed the car to automatically turn the high beams off when there was a vehicle coming, and back on when it passed. I haven’t seen that function on any other vehicle yet.

We had a blast at Disney World and a big thank you to Mazda and DriveShop for providing this vehicle for our travels around south Florida!

Orange Creamsicle Souffle with Nellie’s Free Range Eggs + FREE Egg Giveaway

Anyone who knows me knows that I love to cook. I love trying new recipes and putting my own spin on things.

Have you seen the video’s floating around? You know, the one’s with the amazing desert and entree’s? They make it look so simple, and I cannot help but think “Pinterest Fail” when I see some of the technique’s they do.

One that caught my eye recently is the little souffles made inside of lemons. They are so fancy and decadent, yet so simply put together. I knew I had to try it. Luckily, I had a bag of navel oranges I just purchased, and my Nellie’s Free Range Eggs I got to try, and I wanted to put my own creative spin on it.

Orange Creamsicle Souffle’s. Yes.

Using the Nellie’s eggs felt so right. The best of the best, inside such a fancy-smancy desert. They look so fresh, and the packaging is awesome as well. It is a cute little plastic on plastic carton that helps protect the eggs inside from getting smooshed. They are natural, free range eggs, not that other crap, so they are a little more pricey (they were $4.49 a dozen at my local grocery store).

13334309_10209489885944577_1920123353_o

I used 4 fairly large navel oranges for this recipe (pictured above). Here is what you need;

  • 4 Oranges
  • 2 tbs All Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar (divided 1/4 & 1/4)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 tbs Milk
  • Zest from oranges
  • 3 eggs (separated)

Using Nellie’s Free Range Eggs, divide all 3 eggs into 2 bowls – egg whites in one, egg yolks in the other.

I put the egg whites into the mixing bowl so I can get the meringue started. You have to whisk the egg whites an 1/4 cup of sugar until soft peaks form. I let that run while I started the rest.

I took each orange an cut the bottoms just a bit to make them flat so I can stand them up straight without falling over or rolling around. Then, I cut the tops off, an dug out the insides as neatly as I could (watch you do not poke any holes in the orange peel!) Then I put the pulp inside of small strainer and squeezed out the juices. Feel free to eat all of the yummy left over pulp!

13323903_10209489883984528_176644088_o

Now, mix a 1/4 of the juice from the oranges, and the Vanilla extract & milk. Add this to the egg yolk, flour, and remaining 1/4 white sugar. Whisk and then add to a double boiler or in my case, a heat safe bowl over a pot of boiling water. The key is to keep whisking until the egg mixture thickens up real nice. Then, remove it from the heat, and continue to whisk until the mixture cools. It should be nice an smooth without lumps.

Then, when your meringue has soft peaks, fold it slowly  into the cooled egg mixture. The last step is to pour this mixed into your open orange shells a little more then half way. They will rise significantly, so do not overfill!

Bake at 350 for about 20 minutes or until the tops have browned a bit. Then top with powdered sugar and serve warm or cooled.

Guardian Deet Free Insect Repellent

I have to start off by saying that I am not a big bug spray fan. I’ve tried a few different ones, and was left less then impressed. I hate the smell of them and the oily residue they leave all over. I feel like i’m rubbing a flamable substance all over me an no matter what I do, the smell lingers. I assume the smell of the stuff is what keeps the bugs at bay, but I almost rather be eaten alive by bugs then suffer through the headache that is left after the smell.

Not only do I hate it for myself, but I refuse to put it on my children. The though of them getting that disgusting stuff in their eyes an mouth, well, I don’t want to risk that.

Most of you nixed out bug repellent all together because majority of them contained Deet. I have tried many since the knowledge of deet and how bad it can be for you. I’ve even paid $50 for a few small bottles of one that contained lemongrass and had great reviews to work against the bugs and leave out the deet. The problem is that it smelled like Marijuana! I didn’t want to have my kids or myself walk around smelling like that, so it sits in the graveyard of bug sprays amoungst the others.

Another good alternative is the SSS spray you can buy from Avon. The problem is, it works, but not as good as you’d like. It repels mosquito’s, but it doesn’t protect against ticks which to me, are so scary and I am always checking my kids for ticks.

I was so happy to have the chance to work with Guardian an try out their insect repellents. I am so relieved that I actually LOVE it because you know I speak my mind! I think I finally found the one that works for me an my family. It’s inexpensive, and it smells like an outdoor adventure to me! If that makes any sense. Best of all, you guessed it… no deet!

I haven’t tried it out in a heavily wooded area yet,  so I am not sure how well it would work in that area, but we did go to a local lake up in the mountain area yesterday that is a breeding grounds for mosquito’s being that it’s standing water and next to a wooded area. I used the  4 hour spray.

lake

We were able to have a good time without being bothered by any bugs and we didn’t smell like chemicals. No, it doesn’t say it on the label, so I am not positive, but it seems fairly water resistant to me. I am not sure how it would hold up if you were submersed in water for an extended amount of time, but with splashes of water it was fine.

The other big question, being that it is plant based, does it attract bees? Well, I am not 100% sure on this one, but the fragrance is light on the 4 hour spray an it doesn’t smell to fruity or flowery so I don’t know if they’d bother you. Again, It’s hard to explain the scent because to me it just smells like Summer outside. The scent is a bit heavier on the 8 hour spray so it may attract them, but it’s still not as bothersome as the other brands scents.

Here’s here’s the deets with no deet;

Spring Break Vlog & DriveShop 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Review

2015 Mitsubishi Outlander SE – The 411 Mommas

Check out the Video of our visit to Michigan for Spring Break via the 411 Mommas;

My family and I took a vacation to Michigan to visit family this past week. I was lucky enough to hook up with DriveSTI via the 411 Mommas while there and get to test out the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander for the week. Last time I reviewed the 2015 Outlander Sport, so I was excited to try the standard edition because it had 3rd row seating.11133812_10206294538422886_6840765496378079147_n

The 3rd row seating was probably my favorite feature of this vehicle for this trip. It enabled all of us to travel together in one car rather then taking multiple and following each other. And we sure traveled & shopped a lot!

While I had the vehicle, we visited the Ann Arbor Hands on Museum which was really cool! I have a giveaway going on for 4 passes to this museum if you’re local to Michigan or plan to visit before the year is up (they expire Dec 2015).. Just check out the post below this one.

We also went shopping at the 12 Oaks Mall and made some pit stops along the way. I don’t know what it is, but I love going to malls in other states. There’s something just a little bit different seeing the state pride attire at each.

We took a family 6-person trip to Target and boy did we shop. We left with over 6 bags of stuff filled with toys, clothes, and groceries and guess what? Yep, we were able to fit it ALL in the trunk with one of the 3rd row seats pushed down as well as a stroller AND my sister in-law in the far back seat. It made it easy that she was able to hop out of the back of the trunk being that I had a car seat and booster seat and myself in the middle row. I didn’t have to worry about folding the seat down to let her out.

The push to start was another plus, but you already know I fell in love with that feature from my last review for DriveSTI. When you’re a big shopped like me, it’s easy to open the car or trunk with a quick tap instead of fiddling with your keys or in my case, trying to find them in your purse while holding bags and a 2 year old.

This standard model (I had the Cosmic Blue color if you’re wondering) didn’t come with a GPS built it. I thought that was odd being that it is 2015 and all vehicles should come equipped standard with GPS, but I guess it’s still an “upgrade”. It did still feature a 6.1″ touch screen panel to maneuver the audio features and also had the controls built into the steering wheel which I loved.

The temperature in Michigan was still in the upper 50’s, so we needed to use the heated seats quite a bit. I have to say, I miss these the most! It was rainy majority of the time – April showers, so we didn’t get to enjoy the sunroof, which was a bit small in my opinion anyway,

The gas mileage on this was amazing for how big it was, 26 MPG combined, but it’s a 4 cylinder, so the pick up when you press the gas shows it.To me though, gas mileage is a big deal and I rather have the car move just a bit slower then fill it up everyday.

All in all, we enjoyed having this addition to our vacation and it allowed us more time with our family instead of driving to our destinations in different vehicles.
