To join or not to join? That is the question!

You wouldn’t know this, but I actually wrote this blog backwards. That’s right, I started at the end, and ended up here. Well, actually, I wrote this in the middle… OK, too confusing. The point is, the stuff at the bottom is REALLY important and a huge part of this review, which is why I technically started with it to make sure I included it, so make sure to read it!

I’m sure you’ve seen the banner ads for Disney Movie Club, or saw the sponsored link on Facebook or somewhere similar, and then thought to yourself that it’s too good to be true. It has to be…. but is it though?

From reading the comments of angry mothers or grandparents on the sponsored post or consumer affairs complaints, you’d think that it was a big rip-off or that Disney is doing something that they shouldn’t. I am here to speak from experience as an actual mother who has purchased these and joined the club for the third time to build my kids a nice collection.

movies (This is only part of my collection)

So why did I do it 3 times? And why do I think it is a GOOD deal? Here’s why;

The introductory offer – typically if you go through a referral of a member, you can get 5 Disney DVDs OR Blu-Ray DVD’s for just $1 with FREE SHIPPING. Literally just $1, that’s all. You get to pick from popular Disney titles like Mulan, Brave, Finding Nemo, Planes, and even Frozen. The catch is, to get 5 titles for $1, you need to join with a credit card. This is so they can charge you every 4 weeks for a new title IF you do not decline on time (which I’ll be honest, I’ve forgotten a few times and been charged $40 and angry about it). But I’ll get to that shortly.

Continuing on, that’s $1, for 5 titles. I chose Blu-Ray because I feel like in the end, they’re worth more. Then, they give you the option to add another for just $11.95, that will count toward your commitment status, making it only 3 movies to buy in the next 2 years, instead of 4, AND you get FREE shipping since it’s your initial order. Finally, during this initial order, they give you an option to buy a 2nd BONUS title for just $8.95, again, FREE shipping, but it will not count towards your commitment status.

Adding this initial order up, that’s 7 Blu-Ray DVD’s for a grand total of $21.90 (I can’t remember if that includes tax or not, but lets just say it does for the sake of this post – you’ll get the idea) and you’ll have 7 brand new Disney movies shipped to you within 4 weeks to start or add to your collection.

Now, you still owe the commitment of 3 additional movies. If you initially selected Blu-Ray, they’ll be at a premium price of $29.95, and if you selected DVD format, they’ll be about $19.95 each. Plus shipping which adds an additional $3.95 (for the first title, $1.95 for any additional in your order).  So it will be about $33 per Blu-ray to fulfill your commitment. That seems like a lot for a DVD right? Especially since you can get some of them at Wal-Mart for just $15. Well, not really. If you actually research the titles, the Blu-Ray is about $19.95+ at Wal-Mart, and $26+ at Target for the same movie. Still, it’s more then you’d pay at a big box retailer. Until you actually add it all up, PLUS the perks/benefits.

3 movies at about $33 each is $99- for THREE, yes THREE DVDs. That is blaspheme! No, it actually isn’t. You got a GREAT deal if you really wanted a collection for your kids or yourself. $99 + $21.90= $120.90 for 10 Blu-Ray Disney DVD’s. That totals $12 per movie which is much less then at the stores, no matter which store you get it from.

Sometimes they throw in an extra bonus movie and add shipping for that as well which is shady, so it’ll come to $40 if you’re not paying attention. Example, I forgot to decline my “feature title” this month and was charged $40 from my bank account… I was pretty ticked until I saw that they sent me the new “Planes – Fire & Rescue” Blu-Ray PLUS “Mickey Mouse Christmas Carol” Blu-Ray, my youngest loves planes and Mickey and it fulfilled a commitment, so I only owe 1 more within the next year.

MORE perks and FREE stuff.

Once you receive your initial shipment of DVD’s, you can join Disney Movie Rewards Club for FREE. Typically, when you sign up, they have deals going on for a FREE movie. I got Secretariat, on Blu-Ray for free (with shipping $3.95). Plus, spend your points however you want to. I have gotten so much from them with my points (each movie you register is about 100 to 150 points, so they add up QUICK and your initial DMG order of 7 DVD’s will snag you up to 1500 points right off the bat!!. To date I got;

  1. $10 Disney Store Gift card

  1. I think there is a even better deal where you would Only need 2 more titles to purchase to meet commitment. & a Frozen Blanket. Google disney movie club blu ray forums

  2. I had ordered the Dalmatians movie, paid 1st over the phone through Visa debit which I was told went through, then received a notice to pay in the mail a week later so then I paid by cheque on April 9th and was cashed on April 27th and as well I pre ordered the Tinker bell & the never beast, paid by cheque on April 10th & they cashed on May 5th!

I called to complain as I never even received my Tinkerbell Movie which is now on Netflix! I was told I had to get my bank to fax the proof even though I have photos of the cashed cheques from my bank, what BS! I absolutely hate this useless overpriced headache of a company! I have never been so disgusted with a companies operations as I have with this dis organized, impossible to deal with company.

If you want movies I suggest going to walmart, they are cheaper & you will actually get what you pay for. I DO NOT recommend ANYONE to join the Movie club as you WILL be in for a HUGE disappointment! They are Not a good company to deal with.

the other negative is if you do not immediately reply to their monthly or bi monthly deals they will send them out to you anyways and charge you, I didn’t even want the Dalmatians movie!

    1. It takes up to 3 weeks for a movie to be shipped. If you had taken the time to read that, you might’ve understood.
Everybody would be a lot less pissed off if they just read the damn terms when signing up. ALSO, customer service is ONLY available at certain times.
Why didn’t you just get a printer and save yourself some time? You’re online, it’s easier to do banking that way and it’ll go a lot faster, which seems to be what’s pissing you off in the first place.
The only disappointment I’ve found with DMC so far is how long it takes to get a movie. If I drop $180 for dvds, I really want them actually being shipped, not sitting around a factory for three weeks, ya know?

    2. ALSO, they CLEARLY state at sign up, WITH reminders (I get about 7 of them a month, no lie) to refuse the monthly deal OR they will go ahead and charge you.
DID YOU READ NOTHING WHEN SIGNING UP!? Jesus, you moron.

    3. At first you say you ordered the Dalmations movie and paid over the phone…and then you say you didn’t even want it? So why did you order it? You don’t HAVE to choose their feature title. And you are wrong about “immediately replying” …I got my e-mail about the featured title yesterday, Sept 17th and I have until October 12th to reply…that’s 3 WEEKS! If you can’t be responsible enough to remember to skip it if you don’t want it, that’s your fault, not Disney’s.

Be a responsible adult and double check your bank account before blindly paying something just because someone told you to…if you believe you already paid and they say you didn’t, check first before sending more money! That’s common sense…everyone, even people who work at Disney, make mistakes.

I signed up using a code that also allowed me to only have to buy two more movies, instead of three. Which with shipping, puts my total investment around $89.70 for 9 movies which is $9.96 each for BLU-RAYS (some with the digital HD copy!).

I definitely recommend the DMC to those trying to build up their Disney movie collection!

  3. My wife and I are thinking about doing this for our little guy. I won’t lie I have not read all the fine print but I am hoping someone with experience can answer a quick question. Looking at the initial mailer we got there are about 11 movies we want. If we just bought all of them right away would that fulfill our commitment or do we have to wait and order one or 2 more of the monthly suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Like

    1. Hi Bill! The way it works is they allow you to get 5 movies for your initial order for $2, none of which count as commitment. With the initial order you will have the option if choosing 1 more movie for only $11 which WILL fulfill 1 movie commitment. The other one they allow you (up to 7 total) will not, but it’ll be included in cheaper price too. I suggest it because after all its still cheaper. Then you’ll need to purchase only 2 more to fulfill your commitment but they’ll continue the monthly movie suggestion and charge (you have to decline monthly) if you don’t cancel membership after commitments fulfilled. With that being said, you can then join again with the same 5 movie deal, commitments etc and get more movies, they allow you too as much as you’d like.

Lastly, if you have family or friends who want to join and you refer them, you’ll get 2 free movies per referral who joins (plus doing and handling up to 5 referrals per month).

      I hope that helps!

      1. Where do you get the codes for this. As far as I can see I can get 4 for $1 then I have to order 5 more at full price to fulfill my commitment. At this price it is not worth it at all because I can get them faster and cheaper through Amazon, If I could get the first 7 for under 30 then only have to buy 2 or even 3 more that would make it well worth the time and monet.

      2. Hello,

I was just curious, if you join the club, and then send you the monthly movie suggestions. Would I be notified through email also? And from it seem, you are aloud to decline through online as well?

  4. Thanks for your insight Cheryl! Everything you said makes perfect sense to me. It seems a lot of the negative reviews are based on people not reading the terms & conditions, which leads to confusion. My question is, can I make another order immediately after the “initial order” to use up all the DVD’s I need to purchase for the year? Basically I want to get as many movies as I can for my daughter for Christmas, if I am allowed I would prefer to purchase my yearly requirement right after my initial purchase.
    Thanks!

  5. I would love to introduce you to a site called amazon. All of their blurays cost around $10, and can more than just Disney. You can buy titles from Fox, Dreamworks, Nickelodeon, Universal, etc. Or another site called ebay. You can buy blurays for as little as $8. Or like new-ones for $5. And sometimes they have bundles of like-new blurays for as little as $10. So that can be 6 blurays for $10.

    1. Hey Deez you forget those sites charge a fortune on shipping and handling fees plus they don’t have nearly the guarantee coverage that Disney offers, lastly the eBay quality is not always promised and you don’t get nearly enough bonuses for buying in bulk. with the exchange rate so drastic because i live in Canada your option is the more expensive one.

    2. There are plenty of titles that are not available on other websites. Plus they have monthly deals. My last one was buy one movie, get another for 50% off additional movies and free shipping. I wait for deals with free shipping that makes it worth it.

    3. A lot of Disney titles are vaulted at periodic times and the cheapest I’ve seen a legit (not bootleg which is also a big risk) copy of Beauty and the Beast is over $100 so no, Amazon is not the place to go for legit Disney movies that have been vaulted. If you read reviews, there are a massive amount of reports of bootleg copies being received

      1. I got beauty and the beast for 20 dollars and a copy of alladin for 20 and Aladdin king of thieves for 20 on amazon

  6. So the terms and conditions says that the movies that must be purchased to fulfill the membership commitment must be purchased at regular club price. I am a little confused…so far each movie that I have looked at either has…

A price that is marked out and a cheaper price listed

    OR

A price that is marked out and an even cheaper price listed as the “member offer.”

Can anyone please clarify if either or both or none of these counts toward my commitment?

    Thanks in advance.

    Like

    1. If you buy it as part of commitment status, you’ll pay regular price for it. They’ll remind you monthly and usually it’ll be a 2-movie offer for like $29.95+ shipping if you wait for monthly

      Like

      1. One of the featured movies right now is Mulan AND Pocahontas for less than $35 which would count as only one movie towards movie commitment but you get two.
Also you can preorder movies that are coming out of theaters for a few bucks cheaper and they still count towards the commitment (as long as they are the format you committed to buying).

  7. Question- Can you get two of the same movie to fulfill your purchase commitment or purchase one of the movies that you got during the promotional 4/$1? To use for gifts?

  9. Do the movies you purchase at full price to fulfill your requirement have to be feature films? Or would I be able to just choose whichever films I want from the DMC to fulfill the requirement?

      1. It’s usually cheaper to buy the feature films though. And you have 24 months and plenty of monthly features to choose from.

    1. Hi Holly. Yes, you can cancel after commitment and then use the same email address to rejoin and get more movies. I do suggest waiting at least 1 month after you cancel to rejoin if you’ll be using the same information only so that you get a new member number and there is no confusion.

  11. I’ve been trying to find out if there is a bigger list of movies to choose from than just the one you see on the mail offer and website. I looked through the list and only found 4 movies that I really want. Not even enough to complete the 5 (virtually) free ones. If these are the only options I have to choose from for my 4 commitment movies then this isn’t something I would want to do. But if there is a larger selection to choose from then I will definitely consider signing up. There are movies like treasure planet and Tron that I would love to buy as part of my commitment but they aren’t on the list.
I ask this because with the mail out that I received each movie has a 3 digit number but the numbers skip around. Are these just the ones they are showcasing? Are there also movies in between these numbers that just aren’t being featured? There are 75 movies in the selection (an ample amount to choose from) but there are specific Disney movies that I would love to buy that aren’t on this list.

    Thanks for your help!

    Like

    1. Mark thanks for reaching out. I sent you an email with the link to join. Try seeing what they have available on that instead of the mailer, I feel they give more options up front. Once you join, there are many more movies to choose from for your commitment movies including Tron. They have feature titles monthly as well that include old classics reintroduced as well as brand new titles still in theaters.

  12. Hi!
Question: Is the movie selections to choose from include movies currently in the “vault”? I know that Disney doesn’t have certain titles available, except for the limited promotional time period. For instance, I really want to get ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ for my daughter, but none of those movies are among the promotional selections. Once you join, does the selection list expand to include ALL Disney films? Or are there still certain titles not for sale?

  13. So 2 questions 1st how do you know if you ordered the movie toward your commitment? I preordered a movie and I’m not sure if I did that. And 2nd when you prefer order a movie do they wait until they send it to take the funds out of your account? I bought 1 other movie at the same time and it only took out the fees for that movie not the pre ordered one or says on hold on my account.

    Like

    1. Hi Stacy. If you preorder a movie, it will go towards your commitment. Just be aware that sometimes when you order multiple movies, it usually charges you commitment price for 1 and gives you a discount in the other making it not a commitment. If you are unsure, just give them a call and tell them you want it towards your commitment they will change it for you there great like that.

As far as the preorder, it’ll charge you when they’re ready to ship. They ship it so that you get it the day it comes out on stores usually.

  14. Hi! I’ve been thinking about joining DMC for the past year, I look at it, and then say never mind, then a few weeks later I’ll come back and look, and say never mind again. I guess I’m worried about them charging me when they’re not supposed to or whatever based on some reviews I’ve read. Personally for me I feel like it would be a great option because I love Disney movies, and so don’t my kids, and I already have a collection for them, but there are more that I want. And so with as much as I buy Disney movies I think this would be the way to go. But I’m skeptical I guess. So here’s my question(s)…
When you get the monthly or bi monthly email about the feature film, if you don’t want it, you just have to decline it? And are you obligated to purchase a different movie at that time, or can you just not purchase one?
If you’re able to purchase one at a different time that’s not a feature film, it can be any movie off of their list? And is there like a button or something that you hit suring checkout that says it’s for your commitment?

    Thanks!!!

Who has time to reject 7 orders a month??? Worse!!! You reject them and they ship and charge you anyway. I DO NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE.

    1. Hi Jannie. I appreciate the feedback. This is my personal view on the DMC & I’ve personally had nothing but good experiences with them. I do not work for them and have never been paid by Disney.

I’m not quite sure what you’re referring to add far as the 7 declines a month. I get one monthly commitment email to accept or reject and that’s it. I’ve had 1 issue with them with a movie I ordered and winded up not wanting it and they gladly took it back and refunded me. Nothing but good as far as my experience with their customer service.

      Again, thanks for your feedback!

So my question is, what do I do and how do I cancel this membership?

  20. My wife and I took our time and read the entire terms of service. Since we only owned a couple Disney movies (literally 2 or 3) we decided that buying a few movies over 2 years was inevitable anyway. The big selling point for me was that Disney owns Marvel and the Star Wars franchise, which I would buy personally anyway. Might as well get the other 7 movies for $20.

The big thing here is that you have to OPT OUT of the movie each month if you don’t want it. My wife does it via email and it seems to work fine.

Bottom line: Be a responsible consumer. Understand this is a subscription service that lets you opt out monthly if you do the work. If you’re just starting your Disney/Marvel/Star Wars collection, this is a good bet in my opinion.

I’d rather just stream from my TV, phone, or tablet. I want to sign up for this, but worry I’d be forced to buy a ton of useless discs and no digital codes

  23. Hi I’m a little confused on the payment if you do not fulfill your commitment. Lately my teen daughter signed up for the 4 movies for $1 and has since spent all the money on the Visa Gift card she received, she is under 18 and neither me or her have the funds to fulfill the commitment. I’m worried since this is the case that we are going to be charged for the 4 movies that can’t be payd for. I just recently found this out and the membership expires in 2018.

  25. I would just like to know, when buying the Blu-ray does it come with Blu-ray, DVD, and digital copy for that price? Because at stores they sell them for that price, 39.95 with all. If you do then i would join!

    1. Hi Renee, sent the referral via email. My post refers to US dollars but I’m sure the club converts it for you.

You can definitely see and choose the movies before signing up.

  27. I was wondering if after my commitment am I able to keep my membership indefinitely? I rarely need the movies day of release, but often a month or 2 later will be dropped to 10.98, see finding Dory at the moment.. I would love to keep this going after my commitment is filled, and with my not needing it as of release, I would love to be able to just buy multiple movies in bulk going forward when a great promo is on.. If that makes sense..

I would cancel and renew if I loved the featured title release being delivered asap after release, but for me a month or 2 later is no big deal if the member price is 10-15$ per blu ray as it is.. when on amazon it is still 20$ for Dory.. I will just wait for free shipping promo to be used with the lower than amazon member prices.

  28. What are the perks of signing up from a referral versus just signing up? Right now it is 4 movies for $1, a 5th for $14.95, and a 6th for $9.95. How much cheaper is it when signing up from a referral? I want to do this but I want to get the best deal out there. 🙂

  29. So.

I signed up a few hours ago and just now read this. I got into the 5 for $1 because I thought that it was a great deal. Which, in thought, it is. But reading this has me wary. From what I understand, upon getting the $1 for 5, that means that you are forced to buy 5 more movies in order to even remove your card so that it doesn’t charge you monthly?

    1. You must buy however many more movies it said in your contract. Usually If you go right from the web, then 5 more at about 29.94 each. You have up to 2 yards to fulfill commitment, just make sure to decline the selection monthly or they chose for you per my post. Read my post in detail. You can always call them to add on the other 2 beefier they ship to get them for 8 And 14

      1. Thank you, your response is much appreciated.

I only have one more question. To fit the commitment, when purchasing the 5 movies, do you need to pay for them separately in the shopping cart? Let’s say I want to get Finding Nemo and Finding Dory. Would it count to add them both into the shopping cart in full price and have that count as two full priced movies to go to the commitment, or do I need to do them separately on different orders in order for it to count?

  30. DO NOT JOIN THE DISNEY MOVIE MOVIE CLUB…….
They entrap people into a 2 year agreement where you have to buy full priced movies. And charge you for stuff they send out to you. Very horrible customer service. I just fryer to cancel my account because I was over charged for what I saw was free as long as you bought 2 more movies at regular price. They scam people. Entrapment. Don’t pay for anything that has to do with Disney movie club. Its not worth the hassle that this crap company is saling.
To be able to cancel the damn thing I have to send back the movies I paid for already and buy out the demander of the contract. Just cancel something I didn’t want in the first place.

  32. The big problem is this: if you aren’t extremely diligent about responding to the special offer and only select the movies that you want, you will end up returning movies. Disney does indeed accept returns, but they only issue merchandise credit. So, here’s the scenario: you forget to respond to the special offer, you get a movie you didn’t want and your credit card is billed, then you return the movie and you are given Disney Movie Club credit. If you do this a second time, Disney Movie Club never uses your existing credit for new movies. They just bill your credit card and now you have more Disney Movies Club credit. They are just locking in your money if you ever return anything. If they refunded your credit card for returned items, then all would be good — but Disney is only giving merchandise credit and more importantly **they never apply merchandise credit to the orders for new offers**. They do document this in their terms, but it’s still sleazy.

  33. Do you have to pay to be a member on Disney club ? Can you return the movies even if they are open and get a refund ?

    1. You do pay by buying 5 regular priced for the year as obligation. Then no more. They send monthly though you need to decline or they charge you. Yes you can return.
